King Yellowman reigns at Jazz

KING Yellow Man gave a majestic performance at last night’s staging of the annual Jazz Festival which got off on a high note at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium.

The veteran deejay who skipped from one side to the other on the stage held the cheering audience spell bound during an electrifying performance which lasted for about half hour.

In between deliveries such as ” Blue Berry Hill,” I am Getting Married”, “Mr Chin”, the deejay was hilarious in his interaction with the patrons who he held in stitches.

Before ending his performance he called on his sidekick, Medikal a medical practitioner in Trelawny who is a former Tastee Talent show winner.

Medikal held his own during his rendition of Dennis Brown’s “Should I”.

Cooke looks forward for literary fiesta

PLAYWRIGHT Aston Cooke said he is looking foward to performing in Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth in February. The writer will be one of several persons headlining Talking Trees Literary Fiesta.

Cooke said he will be giving patrons a first taste of his new production Jonkonnu Jamboree that he expressly wrote in time for Jamaica 50.

The piece he said will make its official debut in May of this year and will be performed by the University Players. His other production Fifty to Rahtid is slated to be released in August and will feature the original cast from Jamaica to Rahtid.

Cooke commented on the newest set of actors and ‘Roots Theatre’ saying that he was appreciative of their works.

“These productions possess a lot of stage craftmanship and are very hilarious. There is a market for all genres of Jamaican theatre it is just left to the producer to market the production properly,” he said.

The playwright is no new face to theatre and has a career that dates back to 1985 — the year he was responsible for writing the first five episodes of ‘Oliver at Large’ which became Jamaica’s most successful television series to date. A recipient of the10th national Actor Boy Awards for outstanding achievements in theatre, Cooke is also the founder and artistic director of hte Jamaica Youth Theatre. Some of his other productions include River Mumma and the Golden Table, Chidren Children, Jamaica Pepperpot, Single Entry and Kiss Mi Neck.

Aretha calls off wedding

NEW YORK, USA (AP) — Aretha Franklin won’t be getting fitted for a wedding gown after all: She’s called off her engagement.

A statement released Monday by her representative said Franklin’s wedding to Willie Wilkerson wasn’t going to happen.

“Will and I have decided we were moving a little too fast, and there were a number of things that had not been thought through thoroughly. There will be no wedding at this time,” Franklin said. “We will not comment on it any further because of the very personal and sensitive nature of it. We appreciate all of the many well wishes from friends.”

It’s unclear if the pair are still romantically involved.

Franklin, 69, announced shortly after New Year’s Day that she was getting married. In an interview with The Associated Press, the jovial Queen of Soul talked about getting fitted for gowns by designers including Vera Wang and Donna Karan, and said she hoped for a summer wedding in either Miami or the Hamptons in New York state.

Franklin said the relationship was particularly strong because they had been friends first.

“We’re very compatible, and he supports me and I support him a lot, and he has given me specialised attention that I don’t think I’ve received from anyone else,” she said.

No guns at Jazz and Blues

THE Police are warning members of the public who will be attending this year’s staging of the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival in Falmouth, Trelawny that no firearms will be allowed inside the venue.

No provisions will be made to store them at the venue either, so firearm holders are being advised to leave their weapons at the nearest Police Station or make other arrangements for their safekeeping.
